The history of the cassette tape is closely linked to the history of the underground. For the 80s and 90s generation, it was a format that served as an organic grassroots marketing tool that challenged the power of major record labels to gatekeep trends and culture based on their commercial interests. Genres like metal, punk, hip hop, and other emerging genres forged their artistic trajectory thanks to tape trading; peer-to-peer duplication and sharing of music.
Currently, globalized online infrastructures are the mainstay of our cultural consumption. Streaming giants occupy a similar position to the majors of past decades. Their guidelines program algorithms that make recommendations and project what is being listened to, and thus our cultural landscape is increasingly monotonous and uniform.
This tape I’m sending you is essentially a celebration of the DIY ethos and the mixtape format as a space for experimentation and creativity free from commercial concerns. My challenge to you is to share this music with the people you’d like to share it with directly, without the mediation of algorithms.
Traditionally, the mixtape format has been used by artists to explore and experiment with their artistic ideas independently and carefree. I took the opportunity to revisit and reinvent themes composed over the past four years.
Hence, different aspects of the Organic Music find a state of maturity and fulfillment here. Namely, the use of ample reverb and loops to sustain the piano’s harmonics. Organic Music doesn’t allow itself to crystallize. It’s a field of forces that works on its own. We don’t need to decide when or how; it simply happens. A movement of filling and emptying, effortlessly. There’s no isolated entity that determines its structure; it grows through the multiple relationships that mutually establish themselves. A field contains all the intrinsic elements necessary to develop and thrive. Therefore, it is the perfect context for a multitude of forms to flourish.
